As we age, so does our skin. Our facial features gradually begin to change as we acquire more wrinkles and fine lines. For some, mature skin can feel frustrating, and the instinct is to cover with makeup, but this may not be the best method.

As skin ages, it’s important to understand how to work with these new shapes and lines on your face. Our piece of refreshing advice? You don’t need to apply more makeup. Using hydrating, liquid and minimal products will help you adjust your routine to suit ageing skin.

If you’ve found yourself asking: how do I do makeup on mature skin? Keep reading as our Director of Artistry Pablo Rodriquez gives his top tips to achieve the ideal makeup for mature skin.

HOW DO I DO MAKEUP ON MATURE SKIN?

CREATING A BASE

As we age, our skin begins to lose its elasticity and can appear dry. To build the perfect base, you should apply your skincare routine before your makeup to give your skin moisture. Add a thin layer of Hydra Veil Primer to add a second dose of cool hydration to your skin.

The best way to put foundation on mature skin is to follow the rule of less is more. Replace all powdered products and opt for a liquid foundation that gives a light and luminous look.

Our Beyond Foundation creates a natural dewy finish that reflects light and creates an ultra-silky texture that seamlessly blends for a dewy and healthy-looking complexion.

UNDER EYE CONCEALER FOR MATURING SKIN

“The key with an under-eye concealer for mature skin is to think of it as a product that improves the appearance of shadows around the eyes, rather than adding a layer on layer until dark circles are completely blocked. Too much concealer can make fine lines appear more textured and will easily crease.

Dark circles under the eyes have a purple undertone, giving the appearance of a shadow. Our Skin Base Concealer Pen appears more peach than yellow and can be used as a colour corrector to disguise the appearance of shadows.

My top tips for concealing dark spots and areas? Apply a light foundation first and set the area with a minimal amount of translucent powder. Then, with a small precise brush, cover with concealer only where necessary."

DARK SPOT DEFLECTION

Pablo's essential makeup for mature skin tips is to add light or colour elsewhere to distract the eye. You can choose what the focus can be. For example, if you apply a bright lip, build up your mascara, and define the eyebrows, the attention will not be on the skin if this is an area of concern for you. A minimal look always becomes a "skin look" so if that is not your favourite feature, distract the eye by adding oomph somewhere else.

MATURE EYE MAKEUP

FOCUSING ON THE EYES: LASHES, LINER & SHADOW

Whatever your go-to eye makeup is, stick to it but try to minimise the number of products used as much as possible. Try to stick to light and shimmer tones instead of a dark, smokey eye. Using dark eyeshadows and eyeliners can create shadows and creases in fine lines and wrinkles.

Curling your eyelashes is crucial to making your eyes appear brighter with more definition. Use Masquara to give the illusion of fuller lashes.

For liners, you can use our Colouring Eye Pencil in shade Vow, a light flesh tone, to neutralise pink tones in the waterline if you prefer a more nude shade.  You can also use it as a natural matte highlighter in the inner corner of the eye and to define under the eyebrows. Apply to the Cupid’s Bow and blend in for extra highlight.

LIPSTICK FOR MATURE SKIN

APPLYING LIP LINER

Match the lip pencil to your natural lip colour instead of the lipstick or lip gloss. This will give a much softer look if that’s what you’re after. If you want to alter your lip shape, you can go outside the natural lip line to make them appear fuller while still erring on the side of natural.

CHOOSING A LIP COLOUR

Pablo’s top tip for choosing lipstick for mature skin is to avoid cold tones such as plums and purples. The blue undertone may make skin (of any age) look dull, taking away from your natural brightness.

Instead, Pablo suggests using any lipstick that is warmer with an orange undertone, such as peaches and corals. These shades give a healthier look and brighten the face. For a pro tip: dab the same lip product on the cheeks for a natural flush in to match your lips. Our Sheer Veil Lipstick is perfect for this as the formula gives a glossy finish and a more hydrated look than its matte counterpart.

While these pro tips will help you build confidence in makeup for mature skin – the most important thing to remember is all skin is beautiful and it’s important to wear the makeup you love most.
